Learn which type of mold construction is best suited to your needs.

Marshall-Gruber offers two types of mold construction for use in cultured marble, or solid surface casting (manufacturing) applications. Each uses a different gelcoat technology. Before ordering a mold, you should consider which gelcoat finish you prefer by reading this:

Metamold or Vinyl Ester Molds
Which is right for you?

Metamold™ Molds Vinyl Ester (VE) Molds
Our toughest, most durable mold provides years of heavy-duty use
Years of trouble-free service at reduced cost.
More flexible than Vinyl Ester; better for higher flexing needs; more resilent to heavy extended use
Approximately 15% lower cost compared to Metamold
Recommended for highest exotherm applications
Best for lower duty cycle requirements (less than 2-3 castings/day)
Improved chemical resistance (compared to VE)
Well suited where mold surface finish isn’t as critical
Best for higher duty cycle requirements (3 or more castings per day)

Faster demolding time

Ideal for non-gelcoated applications

Any mold ordered must have the type of construction specified on the part number

To order MetaMold mold construction, add an "M" to the end of the part number
Using a Mark 60 bathtub mold as an example, to order a Metamold version, order 29060M

To order Vinyl Ester (VE) mold construction, add a "V" to the end of the part number
Using a Mark 60 bathtub mold as an example, to order a Vinyl Ester (VE) version, order 29060V

Metamold™ Construction

Metamold is the preferred choice for demanding applications where durability is the key consideration. For only a small cost difference, you get the highest performance gelcoat material on the market for solid surface and cultured marble casting. In fact, Metamold is the ONLY choice recommended by Marshall-Gruber for solid surface production due to its ability to handle higher exothermic temperatures created with solid surface material processing. The distinctive grey metallic color identifies Marshall-Gruber’s proprietary gelcoat and the Metamold option. This metallic composite surface, combined with state-of-the art lamination techniques and specialized box construction, is an option you will want to include on all of your mold orders.

Metamold Advantages:

Metamold’s metallic composite gelcoat provides greater surface strength and improved chemical resistance. Greater surface strength means the original high gloss finish is retained longer.

  • Makes product release and demolding less time consuming.
  • Lowers surface tension thus reducing crazing.

Other Metamold benefits:

  • Suitable for high exotherm temperature applications.
  • Ideally suited for non-gelcoated Granatex 500 applications.
  • Provide extended mold life.
  • Save time.

Note: To order a mold with Metamold construction, add an "M" to the end of the mold order numbers listed on this website.

LIMITED WARRANTY:

This mold is warranted to be free of any manufacturing defects. When used in accordance with these instructions and recommended materials and processes, this mold should produce hundreds of cast polyester castings of high quality. This warranty expressly does not include damage caused to the mold because of gelcoat or matrix that sticks to the mold. (This is a function of the mold preparation and release system used.) No other warranty, expressed or implied, is assumed nor will be assumed.

Vinyl Ester (VE) Gelcoat

Vinyl Ester is ideally suited for low production shops (turn molds once a day).  VE, although not as tough as META, will give many years of trouble free service at a reduced cost.

When should you consider using Vinyl Ester?:

  • VE is lower cost than Metamold (approximately 15% typically)
  • VE is helpful in areas where lower production volume (duty cycle) is expected.
  • VE can be used in applications where the mold surface finish is not as critical - such as for female molds.
  • Because VE creates a more flexible surface compared to Metamold, molds subjected to twisting or bending may be better suited to VE construction.
  • The same release agents that are used with Vinyl Ester are used with Metamold - so you can use a single release systems for both options.

Note: To order a mold with Vinyl Ester construction, add a "V" to the end of the mold order numbers listed on this website.
